Motherhood Realized

Have you heard of Power of Moms?  It's a wonderful site for moms--full of essays, podcasts, videos, and programs all geared toward moms.  If you haven't already, you need to go check it out!

Are you back? Ok. Recently they published a book titled, "Motherhood Realized"  which is a collection of essays about motherhood.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a copy. This little book was chalk full of essays that made me think "yes!"  Some even brought tears to my eyes (which was a little embarrassing since I mostly read while in waiting rooms and at the park!)  I jotted down several of my favorite gems:

"You are exactly who your children need.  No one can fill your shoes."

"Your children want you!"

"I feel empowered to let go of my guilt, celebrate the progress that I have made, and accept that during this season of my life, motherhood is enough."

"... our fabulousness and greatness is often very ordinary."

"We might as well accept that the hard stuff is going to happen and prepare for it wherever possible. And once we've got that acceptance and preparation in place, it's a lot easier to enjoy our lives."

"It is not always easy, but it is good."

"...when the sweet moments come, we need to breathe them in long and deep."

I could honestly keep going and going. So many great thoughts!  So many things that helped me to refocus and become re-energized! I loved that at the end of each essay there was a question posed and a challenge issued, like this one:

Ask your children to tell you something they think is fabulous about you.  Write it down and place it somewhere you can see often.

Most of all I was reminded that motherhood is a sisterhood.  We're all in this together trying our very best.

And today we are offering an e-book version of both Motherhood Realized and their first book Deliberate Motherhood!  (Just in time for Mother's Day!)

**I was given an ebook of Motherhood Realized to review but all opinions are my own.

  3. A great motherhood moment for me is whenever my baby laughs and laughs, just delighting in her little world.

  4. The best thing about my mom is that she loves to be needed. There was about a decade that we did not have a relationship, and it was very hard to allow myself to "need" her again. Each time I do, our relationship gets much closer. At least for a little while. She's always willing to help though, which is great to be able to rely on her.

  8. the other day, my six year old brought me a book to read. i said, don't you want to read some shakespeare (trying to raise the bar just a little bit -- he can't read enough of how to train your dragon), i thought you really liked it. he replied, not really mom, i was just trying to be nice. i thought it was so thoughtful that he read it with me because he knew that i liked it.

  10. A favorite mothering moment came today when I realized that my kids were all happily entertaining themselves while I was making dinner. I stopped for just long enough to soak it all in and realize- this is what it's all about. This is what I want most from life!

  14. A favorite mom moment was actually when I messed up and had yelled at my kids then after calming down I went in to apologize and told my son that I was sorry and that I am not perfect and I am trying just like him but that sometimes even moms make mistakes and need to repent and ask for forgiveness. It then led us into a very tender conversation with great questions and a wonderful bonding time.

  19. Best thing about my mom: she valued education, went back to college and graduated as a single mom. Just recently I followed in her footsteps and finished my degree and my children cheered me on from the couch (while in school) and the bleachers earlier this month.

  20. My favorite moment was on a daughter date my sweet three year old got a best friend necklace as a prize. She was confused why there were two necklaces and so I explained how they worked. She then responded with, "I am going to give it to you because you ARE my best friend!" Then yesterday she found hers again and reminded me of what it meant and when I shared a bite of my dinner, she said "Its ok that I slobbered because we are best friends." Adorable, but gross. And yes, I still have my bright pink necklace.
