Simple Christmas Nativity

I'm the leader of the 8-11 year old Activity Day Girls program at my church.  We meet twice a month and make crafts, do service projects or activities, and form friendships.

During the Christmas season I always try my best to focus on the real meaning of Christmas so I wanted to do an activity with the girls during the month of December that reflected that.  I thought this nativity I found at Learning To Be Me was beautiful and really loved the simplistic look. It was also simple enough that our group could finish it in one night.

I was able to pick up all my supplies at Hobby Lobby.

Supplies:
Ball knob 1 1/4"
Rectangle 2 3/8" x 1 1/2" x 3/16"
Furniture button 1/2"
1" x 5" wood block
1" x 4" wood block
Paint colors of choice
Glue
Twine

This is all you need for one nativity.

After letting a quick coat of paint dry, I glued the pieces together using some tacky glue and tied around a piece of twine.  Simple and lovely.

This is a great gift to make for family and friends and it's simple enough that you can easily whip up several at once.  It's also simple enough to make with your kids, or better yet have your kids make them as gifts.

  3. I LOVE this idea. We don't have a nativity yet, but I'm 99% sure this will be adorning our house in some way this season. How do you think it would work as an ornament? We hold Jesus birthday parties on the 25th and always make ornaments as momentos. I'm thinking that these could be perfect for the ornaments this year, if I glue/staple ribbon to the back. Would they be too heavy?

    1. I love the idea of making it into an ornament! Good thinking. I don't think it would be too heavy as an ornament, but you could even use smaller pieces and make it a miniature size. Have fun!

  6. We made these same nativities at our RS Super Saturday. We used a piece of torn muslin to wrap around the babe before tying and gluing them together. They were a huge hit.

  16. I've been meaning to make these but haven't been able to find the supplies very easily. Namely, the 1" blocks. Did you find them at Hobby Lobby also? Thanks. :)

    1. The 1" blocks came in a long stick that I had cut into 4 and 5 inch pieces. They were at Hobby Lobby too.

  27. This is adorable! I want to do a craft with my primary class this coming Sunday and this nativity may be doable in the allotted time. I am not a crafty, artsy person at all so can you please let me know the exact quick drying paints and colors you used? Thanks in advance.
